KUCHING: The prevalence of mental-health issues in Malaysia has doubled since 2019, making it one of the most urgent health challenges currently faced by the nation, said Sarawak State Health Department director Dr Veronica Lugah.
Citing the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS), she said 4.6 per cent of the population which equivalent to about one million Malaysians experience depression, while one in three adults does not engage in adequate physical activity.
Therefore, she said that a holistic approach is essential to improve the nation’s well-being.

“Health is not merely the absence of disease, but the ability to enjoy life with energy and well-being,” she said when delivering her opening speech at the state-level Malaysia Healthy Month (BMSS) and World Physical Activity Day (WOPAD) 2025 celebration here at at Mydin Tunku Vista today.
Dr Veronica also urged those experiencing emotional distress to not be afraid but to contact the 24-hour mental health support line at 15555.
On the two-day programme, she said it aims to strengthen physical and mental resilience through community-based activities accessible to all age groups.
“Health promotion requires support beyond the Ministry of Health. I call upon government agencies, the private sector and communities to collaborate under the Whole-of-Nation approach of the National Healthy Malaysia Agenda (ANMS),” she said.
She also expressed hope that the BMSS celebration will continue annually as an effort to build a healthier and more informed society in Sarawak.
“Those experiencing emotional distress can contact the 24-hour mental-health support line at 15555,” she added.
Meanwhile, the programme’s theme, “Cultivate a Healthy Lifestyle, Strengthen the Body’s Immunity” highlights preventive health and the importance of nurturing positive lifestyle habits.
Among the activities held were aerobithon sessions, a recycling runway competition, a children’s talent showcase, free health screenings, pocket talks and a colouring competition for senior citizens aged 50 and above.
A traditional silat performance by Kelab Silat Sang Elang also demonstrated the role of cultural heritage in encouraging fitness.
