KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia-Indonesia Journalists’ Friendship Association (ISWAMI) has taken a serious view of an on-air slip-up during the live broadcast of the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on Sunday.
The incident occurred when a Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) commentator mistakenly referred to Indonesia’s president as Joko Widodo. The country’s current president is Prabowo Subianto.
According to Awani, the Broadcasting Department has issued an apology for the error and stressed that immediate measures would be taken to ensure such mistakes are not repeated.
In a statement, ISWAMI expressed confidence that media organisations in both countries would continue to play a vital role in strengthening bilateral ties, in line with the summit’s theme, ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’.
“ISWAMI is confident that all editorial stakeholders will reinforce editorial checks and fact-verification processes to ensure information delivered is accurate and maintains integrity,” the statement read.
The association also urged media practitioners to take the incident as a lesson and exercise greater caution, especially when covering official international events. – BERNAMA
