KUCHING: A 39-year-old local man was arrested by police on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine worth RM550 during an operation along Jalan Stutong Baru here on Friday.
Kuching District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Alexson Naga Chabu, said the suspect was detained by a team from the Sungai Maong Police Station at 2:30 pm following intelligence gathering and public information.
“Inspection on the suspect led to the discovery of a transparent plastic packet containing a substance believed to be methamphetamine weighing five grammes, with an estimated market value of RM550,” he said in a statement today.
Alexson further said a urine screening test also showed the suspect tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
Further investigation later revealed that the suspect had nine previous drug-related records, including under Section 39B, Section 39A(1), Section 12(2), and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, he added.
“The suspect has been remanded for three days, from November 2 to 4, to assist in investigations under Section 39A(1) of the same Act.
“If convicted, the offender can be sentenced to imprisonment of between two and five years and whipping of between three and nine strokes,” he said.
Alexson said that the success was the result of swift police action and cooperation from the local community in providing information about drug activities in their area.
He also urged the public to channel any information related to drug activities through the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) hotline at 012-2087222 or NCID of the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters at 017-5929211.
