SIBU: The Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM) Sarawak Branch, in collaboration with the Malaysian Department of Chemistry (JKM) Sibu Branch, organised the “ChemisTree for Nature” programme at the Tun Ahmad Zaidi Nature Reserve here recently.

The programme, which also received the cooperation of the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) Sibu, was to raise awareness on the safe management of chemicals among SFC officers and rangers.

JKM Sibu Branch director Abdul Razak Mohd Imam said the programme was part of the department’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative with IKM, in addition to efforts to strengthen cooperation networks with related agencies.

“This programme aims to help SFC rangers understand the methods of managing chemicals used in their daily tasks.

“This includes proper storage, use and steps to be taken in the event of an accident.”

He added that among the chemicals that are often used are petroleum products such as diesel and kerosene, as well as chlorine used as a cleaning agent.

He noted that the SFC had also requested JKM’s assistance to obtain safety guidelines regarding the handling of these substances in the field.

“We also took this opportunity to donate suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) to the SFC rangers to ensure that they use the correct protection while working.”

Apart from activities related to chemical safety, Abdul Razak said that the programme was also attended by students from the Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS) Sibu and IKM members through tree planting activities in the reserve area.

“This tree planting activity aims to expose students to the importance of preserving and appreciating the environment, as well as instilling awareness of the role of trees in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.”

He said that this was the first time such a programme was held with SFC Sibu and his party intends to continue cooperation in the future.

At the programme, JKM Sibu Branch presented a donation of 14 boxes of PPE to SFC.

Also in attendance were the representative of the IKM Sarawak Branch, Hazalinawati Zailani; and SFC Sibu regional manager Lily Sir.
