SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) celebrated a proud milestone as 4,100 graduates received their scrolls at the university’s 29th Convocation Ceremony, underscoring the institution’s growing global reputation for excellence, innovation and sustainability in higher education.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit said the ceremony symbolised not just academic success but also the perseverance, resilience and sense of purpose that defined UNIMAS graduates.

He described the convocation as a testament to the university’s commitment to shaping individuals who combined intellect with empathy and knowledge with responsibility.

“Today, we celebrate not only the success of our graduates but also the collective spirit of determination, sacrifice, and unity that has brought them to this historic day,” he said during the first session of the ceremony held at the Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra (DeTAR), UNIMAS, yesterday,

The ceremony honoured 3,448 undergraduate and 652 postgraduate students, each carrying a unique story of struggle and triumph.

Furthermore, Ahmad Hata reminded the 123 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) graduates receiving their scrolls during the first session of the ceremony that their degrees represented both achievement and duty.

“The degree you hold is not just an academic recognition, but a trust that demands wisdom, humility and integrity.

“It symbolises your ability to think beyond self-interest, for the common good and the sustainability of our shared world,” he said.

He ended with a call for graduates to uphold compassion and purpose in their journey beyond the university.

“Use your knowledge to build and to heal, not to harm. Wherever life takes you, carry the spirit of UNIMAS, which combines intellect with humanity,” he said.
