KUCHING: Sarawak’s DanceSport community recorded a milestone month in October through the success of the Borneo Open International DanceSport Championship and Convention (BOIDC) 2025 and Tyng Dance Academy’s (TDA) national victories.
Held in Kuching from Oct 1 to 7, BOIDC 2025 remained the only DanceSport championship in Sarawak sanctioned by the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF), DanceSport Asia (DSA) and Malaysia DanceSport Federation (MYDF).
TDA principal Chan Tyng Tyng, who chaired the BOIDC organising committee expressed pride to represent Sarawak with professionalism, integrity and excellence.
“Our mission is to raise Sarawak’s dance industry through internationally recognised standards and meaningful pathways for young athletes,” he said in a statement.
The event, supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia (KBS), Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP) and Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MYSED), featured athletes across Juvenile, Junior, Youth and Adult divisions.

TDA, representing Sarawak, swept 193 medals — 76 gold, 63 silver and 54 bronze — making BOIDC the state’s most successful DanceSport event to date.
Continuing their momentum, TDA represented Sarawak at the 2nd SDSA Malaysia Open Dancesport Championship in Kuala Lumpur from Oct 25 to 26 and secured 13 medals across various categories.
In a separate achievement, Chan received the Distinguished Alumni Award 2025 from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, presented by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The award recognised her contributions to arts, education and community development, reflecting Sarawak’s growing role in creative and performing arts education.
“This distinction is one of Swinburne’s highest honours, celebrating alumni who demonstrate leadership, impact, and service to society.
“Chan’s recognition highlights Sarawak’s growing influence in arts education, youth development and international cultural engagement, reflecting the state’s commitment to nurturing world-class talent,” the statement added.
