SIBU: An architect of the University of Technology Sarawak’s (UTS) formative years, Datuk Dr Abdul Hakim Juri, was on Saturday conferred the title of Emeritus Professor.

The honour was bestowed on him at the UTS 10th Convocation Ceremony, in recognition of his foundational role in establishing the university and steering its early growth.

In his acceptance remarks, Abdul Hakim paid tribute to the many individuals and agencies who helped build UTS from inception.

“Starting up a university from ground zero is not a one-person job,” he said.

He noted the university’s rapid expansion in programmes, research strength and enrolment, while reflecting on progress since he served as founding vice-chancellor.

“When I finished my tenure, we had about 2,000 students, and now we have almost over 5,000 students.

“I’m really very proud that this university has been accepted very well by the community here,” he said.

The UTS leadership described Abdul Hakim as an architect of the university’s formative years whose vision bridged academia and industry, and whose campus planning emphasised both function and inspiration.

His lasting legacy is seen in the institution’s values, culture and direction as it positions Sarawak for a technology-driven future.

The 10th Convocation Ceremony gathered graduates, families and industry partners to celebrate academic achievement and the university’s growing regional role.
