SIBU: As the government pushes its agenda forward in areas such as economic development, education, and community progress, more young people are stepping up by joining Saberkas and various youth organisations to contribute to the community.

This was stated by Bukit Assek assemblyman, Joseph Chieng Jin Ek who described this as an encouraging and positive trend as Sarawak continues to grow and strives towards greater goals.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Saberkas Bukit Assek PickleBall Tournament 2025 held at MYcentre here recently, Chieng who is also the Sarberkas Bukit Assek Branch Chairman said the branch has always placed youth involvement, healthy living, and community cohesion at the heart of its mission.

He stressed that Pickleball is a sport that perfectly supports these values, which is suitable for all ages, easy to learn, and capable of fostering teamwork, focus, and physical fitness.

“Therefore, while we organise tournaments, we are also actively expanding youth membership, strengthening youth leadership development, and creating more platforms for young people.

“We hope that more youths can find confidence, build teamwork, and grab opportunities for growth through sports.

“The tournament is not just a competition, it is also a platform for participants to make friends, learn from one another, and build connections. I hope everyone competes with sportsmanship, maintains their best form, and enjoys the excitement and challenges of every match,” he enthused.

Thanking all members of the organising committee, referees, volunteers, and sponsors for making the tournament possible, he added that their efforts have brought greater vibrancy to the community and created more opportunities for the young people.

Earlier on, Organising Chairman, Pau Chiong Shii said Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports around the world today, and bringing it to the local community reflects the commitment to promoting healthy lifestyle, positive social engagement, and youth development.

“Our aim is simple— create a platform where the community can stay active, connect, and enjoy friendly competition,” he said.

He expressed his gratitude to Chieng for his continuous support and for uplifting community-based initiatives such as this tournament.
