THE Sarawak government has announced a major revision to the remuneration and benefits of local councillors and community leaders, reflecting their expanding roles in strengthening local governance and service delivery across the state.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the Special Fixed Monthly Allowance for the state’s 864 councillors would be increased from RM300 to RM1,000, applied uniformly across all councils.

He said this followed a comprehensive review of the incentive structure for councillors serving in all 27 local authorities.

“Second, councillors will receive an additional medical benefit of RM1,000 per year for basic treatment at government-recognised private hospitals or clinics, supplementing their existing access to medical services at public facilities.

“The new rates of allowance and medical benefits will involve a total additional financial implication of RM8.1 million per year and will be implemented with effect from January 1, 2026,”he said.

He said this during the third session of fourth term of the 19th State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today (Nov24).

Additionally, Abang Johari said Ketua Masyarakat and Ketua Kaum (KMKK) would receive an increase of RM400 in monthly remuneration.

He said this involved an additional allocation of RM37 million annually, with effect from January 1, 2026.

“The KMKK form the backbone of Sarawak’s grassroots governance. With over 7,700 appointed leaders, including Temenggong, Pemanca, Penghulu, and Ketua Kaum, they play a vital role in bridging the government and the rakyat.

“They are entrusted with maintaining social harmony, resolving local disputes and supporting the implementation of government policies at the community level,” he added.
