KUCHING: A local man was arrested after he allegedly ran amok and swung a machete at members of the public outside a mosque in Kampung Tabuan Lot last Sunday (Nov 23).

The incident, which occurred at around 7.40 pm, left an elderly man in his 70s with injuries on his left fingers.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed the arrest and the 25-year-old suspect will be remanded once he completes medical treatment at the hospital.

The case is being probed under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years, a fine or whipping upon conviction.

Alexson urged the public not to speculate or spread unverified information related to the incident.

In addition, they are reminded to keep their emotions in check and avoid aggressive behaviour that could endanger themselves or others.

He added that anyone who witnesses suspicious or high-risk behaviour should promptly inform the police to prevent unwanted incidents.
