BINTULU: Around 250 residents from eight longhouses in Tatau received free eye screenings this week as SOP Foundation’s Vision Care Project expanded deeper into rural Sarawak.

The second round of the programme was hosted at Rh Buli, Sungai Semanok, and welcomed participants from neighbouring longhouses including Rumah Unjie, Rumah Randi, Rumah Ramli, Rumah Kalip, Rumah Janggu, Rumah Kawie and Rumah Luming.

The initiative aims to tackle limited access to eye care in remote communities, providing screenings, consultations, and prescription glasses free of charge.

Supported by Miri Specvision Optometry, the session drew strong community interest, reflecting growing awareness of eye health’s role in overall wellbeing.

Residents requiring corrective lenses will receive them once prepared by the optical team, fully sponsored by SOP Foundation.

Estate managers Dirkensky Anak Dix and Sam Lim Kien Hock, representing SOP Kuala Tatau 1 and 2 Estates, praised the response.

“The community’s enthusiastic participation shows how much they value eye health. Initiatives like this bring essential services straight to residents who might otherwise miss out,” they said.

SOP Foundation thanked the estates, residents, and Miri Specvision Optometry for making the programme a success.

With further rounds planned next year, the foundation remains committed to improving vision care and promoting health across rural Sarawak.
