KUCHING: Japanese companies view Sarawak as an emerging regional leader in renewable energy, with expectations of growing investment in green hydrogen and ammonia in the coming years.

Go Sakano, Managing Director (ASEAN and India) of Yamada Consulting & Spire (Y&S) Singapore Pte Ltd, said Sarawak is a forefront runner in renewable energy in the region and is poised to become a hub under strong leadership.

“That environment is something Japanese companies require because, as I mentioned, policy stability is one of the key elements to judge, to invest, from the Japanese corporate side,” he said.

He said this in a press conference after the Yamada International Renewable Energy Investment Forum, attended by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Riverside Majestic Hotel here today.

Sakano added that Japan’s strong industrial base is driving interest in clean fuels, and he anticipates commercial demand for Sarawak-produced green hydrogen, ammonia, and other renewables to enter Japanese supply chains within the next two to three years.

“I hope it happens in the mid-term, let’s say two to three years,” he said.

Y&S, through their combined expertise in Cross Border Mergers & Acquisition (M&A) and growth consulting, seeks to venture outside the shores of Japan to find meaningful collaborations with businesses from the ASEAN region and beyond.

As a young company that was only fully established in 2024, Y&S has picked Sarawak to be the first destination in holding such a forum.

Companies attended the forum were Sumitomo Heavy Industries,Toho Gas, Sojitz Corporation, Tokyo Power Technology Co Ltd, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Mitsubishi Corporation and Dans Energy (India).
