SARAWAK recorded the highest achievement in the national tree-planting campaign after planting 55 million trees as of Oct 31, exceeding the original target of 35 million set for the state.

Deputy Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Minister Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the accomplishment reflected Sarawak’s strong implementation of the Malaysia Greening Programme: 100 Million Trees Campaign for the 2021–2025 period.

He said the state continued efforts to expand its environmental programmes through protected areas, forest landscape restoration and green-economy initiatives.

“The International Conference on Forest Plantation Research and Innovation 2025, held in Kuching from Nov 17 to 19, brought together experts from 11 countries to share experience and expertise in research, innovation and sustainable forest plantation management.

“The conference served as an important platform to expand research networks, align best practices and open opportunities for green-economy investments, particularly in the forest plantation industry,” he said.

He said this when delivering the Natural Resources and Urban Development ministerial winding-up speech on behalf of Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan in the august House today.

On the same note, Len said Sarawak maintained forest cover at more than 62 per cent of its land area, describing forest protection as a key long-term policy for the state.

He said the effort had been strengthened through the expansion of protected areas, forest landscape restoration programmes and green-economy-oriented initiatives.

“Various approaches had been taken to strengthen Sarawak’s environmental conservation framework, including the use of modern technologies through strategic cooperation with local and international agencies from the United States, Australia, China, Finland, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates,” he said.

Len added the Sarawak Delta Geopark received Green Card status from the UNESCO Global Geopark Council during its meeting in Chile in September, with the application scheduled for endorsement by the UNESCO Executive Board in May 2026.
