SIBU: Narcotics police went on the offensive against drugs last month, arresting 177 individuals and seizing suspected syabu worth RM6,650.
From Nov 1 to 30, ‘Ops Tapis Narkotik’ led to the arrests of nine suspects under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952; 11 under Section 12(3); and 157 drug addicts under Section 15(1)(a).
Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili in a statement, said the suspects consisted of 165 men and 12 women.
“Throughout the operation, a total of 60.30g of suspected syabu, valued at RM6,650, was seized.
“Since then, all of the suspects have been charged in court under the respective sections,” he said.
In light of this, he assured that the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) will continue to intensify operations to curb drug distribution and abuse.

Zulkipli stated that those convicted under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, can be jailed for up to five years and given not more than nine strokes of the cane.
Under Section 12(3), offenders may be fined up to RM100,000 or imprisoned for up to five years, or both.
Meanwhile, those charged under Section 15(1)(a) can be fined up to RM5,000 or jailed up to two years, or both, and placed under two years of supervision under Section 38B of the same Act.
