THE Sarawak government, through Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (PETROS) is focused on increasing domestic natural gas use in the state to 30 per cent by 2030, as part of the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR).
Utility and Telecommunication Minister, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the SGR includes several strategic initiatives across four key hubs in Miri, Samalaju, Bintulu, and Kuching.
“These initiatives include a 500 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) project in Miri, which is 30 per cent complete and expected to begin commercial operations in the fourth quarter of 2027.

“The Kidurong – Samalaju Gas Pipeline project, a 65 km pipeline that will supply 300 million Standard Cubic Feet per Day (MMscfd) of natural gas, is 91 per cent complete and expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2026,” he said when delivering his ministerial winding-up speech in the august House today (Dec 1).
He added the Gas to Bintulu (GtB) pilot project, which started in July 2025, provides piped natural gas to 40 low-income households in Sungai Plan, Bintulu, as the first step in bringing local gas directly to communities.
“These projects are integral to achieving the state’s goal of increasing domestic gas usage. The Sarawak Virtual Pipeline System (VPS), set to deliver Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Bintulu to Kuching by the first quarter of 2026, will expand gas access to off-grid areas, support domestic gas consumption, and bolster local industrial development.
“Furthermore, the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub (KLCH) will develop infrastructure, including a regasification terminal, low-carbon petrochemical park, and a 5,000 MW CCGT in Kuching. These efforts are all part of the broader Sarawak Gas Roadmap, which aims to meet the target of increasing domestic gas usage to 30 per cent by 2030,” he said.
