SIBU: The culvert installation project along Jalan Hock Chuong at West Bank here, including a section near the road junction, has been successfully completed.

The upgraded drainage system is expected to reduce flooding incidents, offering much-needed relief to local residents.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch Chairman, Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie, together with his team and several community leaders, visited the site yesterday (Dec 2) to inspect the completed works.

Those present included Penghulu Wong Ung, Kapitan Chew Hoo Kiong, Kapitan Tang Chuo Ging, Councillor Justin Wong, and Councillor Yong Ing Hock.

Lau said the road is an important access route for residents travelling to the main road, Jalan Sg. Ma’aw, as well as to nearby schools.

However, he pointed out that the area has long faced ineffective drainage, causing water levels to rise rapidly during heavy rain.

This, he added, has repeatedly resulted in flooding, disrupting residents’ daily movements, affecting students on their way to school, and impacting nearby vegetable farms.

He noted that after West Bank experienced several cases of high water levels and flooding earlier this year, local residents sought assistance from Kapitan Tang Chuo Ging and his team.

“Upon receiving the request, our team immediately began gathering the necessary information. After several rounds of discussions with residents and on-site assessments with engineers, we submitted the application to the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC). The project was subsequently approved and has now been successfully completed,” he explained.

Lau hoped that the completion of the culvert installation will significantly improve the drainage system and help resolve the flooding issues that residents have endured for many years.

He also extended his appreciation to the community leaders and residents for their cooperation, which allowed the project to be carried out smoothly and efficiently.
