KUCHING: The Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) has strengthened its position as a key driver of Sarawak’s economic transformation through major achievements in renewable energy, infrastructure development, tourism and global expansion.

These accomplishments were highlighted last night (Dec 5) during SEDC’s 53rd anniversary corporate dinner at a hotel here, which was attended by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, deputy ministers, state representatives, departmental heads, strategic partners and the SEDC community.

One of the main highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Recognition of Visionary Excellence to Abang Johari, an award that represents SEDC’s highest honour and acknowledges his transformative leadership and contribution to Sarawak’s development.

“On behalf of the SEDC Board and Management, we express our heartfelt appreciation to the Premier for his continuous support and guidance, and, above all, for his trust in SEDC to undertake strategic projects shaping Sarawak’s economic transformation,” said SEDC chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Abdul Aziz Husain.

Reflecting on the corporation’s journey since its establishment in 1972, Abdul Aziz said SEDC has continually evolved in its projects, organisational culture and overall direction, guided by the legacy of past chairmen and strengthened by a commitment to innovation and sustainable growth.

He credited the organisation’s achievements to its workforce, and emphasised that unity and collective commitment have been central to SEDC’s progress over the past five decades.

During the event, SEDC also recognised outstanding performance by its subsidiaries through three excellence awards.

Sarawak Cultural Village was named the Most Outstanding Investee Company for elevating Sarawak’s cultural heritage to international standards and for securing both national and global recognition.

SEDC Resources Sdn Bhd received the Company of the Year award for strong financial performance, effective project implementation and leadership in resource based industries, supported by ongoing innovation and sustainability initiatives.

Rosewood Station Pty Ltd received the Inspiring Global Presence award for expanding operations internationally and positioning Sarawak as a competitive participant in global markets.

Abdul Aziz also highlighted several recent milestones, noting that SEDC Energy has made significant progress in renewable energy, particularly in green hydrogen, supporting Sarawak’s transition towards a low-carbon economy.

He added that projects such as the Mega Methanol Plant in Bintulu and the Autonomous Rapid Transit system under Sarawak Metro reflect SEDC’s ability to deliver complex and high impact developments.

SEDC’s investments continue to expand across tourism, hospitality, agriculture, livestock, minerals, infrastructure and real estate, with initiatives such as the Damai Peninsula Masterplan and the acquisition of Mulu Marriott Resort and Spa further demonstrating the corporation’s broad influence on Sarawak’s economic landscape.

“With the Premier’s leadership, unwavering support from the State Government and the dedication of our Board, management and staff, I am confident that SEDC will continue to rise, lead and inspire, building upon our 53 year legacy towards a sustainable and prosperous future,” he said.

The event also recognised the important role of SEDC’s media partners, including Suara Sarawak, Sarawak Tribune, Dayak Daily, Bernama, TVS, Utusan Sarawak, and Jabatan Penerangan, whose coverage has helped highlight SEDC’s initiatives and showcase Sarawak’s development to the wider public.
