KUCHING: The upgrading works for Sarawak Stadium are expected to begin in January next year, said Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
He said the upgrading needs to be completed by at least June 2027, ahead of the SEA Games scheduled for September that year.
“The contractor has been identified and the appointment letter will be handed over to the relevant parties before the end of this year,” he said.
He made the remarks while commenting on preparations for the 2027 SEA Games during the press conference for the New Year Countdown 2026 celebration at Bangunan Baitulmakmur here today.
He explained that the budget has already been approved by the Cabinet for the purposes of organising the Games and upgrading sports facilities in the state.
“The cost is quite high but we want to focus on the execution – the important thing is that the event can be carried out successfully,” he said.
Commenting on the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, Abdul Karim stated that many valuable experiences were gained that can be applied in 2027.
“Our secretariat team was also able to observe the management of the SEA Games in Thailand. We gained a lot of good experiences to apply when we become the host ourselves,” he said.
