BANGKOK: Malaysia’s Jonah Chang Rigan clinched the gold medal in the men’s shot put final at the 33rd SEA Games with a throw of 18.78 metres.
The 22-year-old Sarawak-born athlete dominated the event at the Suphachalasai National Stadium here today (Dec 13), comfortably finishing ahead of the competition.
Thailand’s Silamool Thongchai earned silver with a best throw of 16.80 metres, while the Philippines’ William Morrison III took bronze after a closely fought contest, registering a top mark of 16.66 metres.
Jonah’s series of powerful throws had the crowd captivated, with chants of “No Pork, No Power” echoing through the stands, spurring him on.
His winning mark of 18.78 metres not only secured the gold but also set new national and SEA Games records, a significant personal milestone in his career.
Despite Silamool’s spirited efforts on home soil, the Thai athlete was unable to surpass Jonah’s record-breaking performance, cementing Malaysia’s dominance in the event.
