KUCHING: Plans are underway to establish the Sarawak Motor Gymkhana Racing Programme as an official annual event at the state level.

Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) acting chief executive officer, Khairul Nizam Morshidi, said the competition serves as one of the talent discovery platforms for riders to progress further, either at the national or international level.

“I hope this programme can be continued and made an official annual event as it is one of the platforms to discover talents and for producing many professional gymkhana athletes from Sarawak.

“It is a strategic initiative. This programme not only functions as a competitive arena but also highlights local talent and helps shape a racing culture that is safe, disciplined and ethical,” he said.

He said this when speaking at the closing ceremony of the programme held at the competition venue, the car park in front of the Stadium Negeri, Petra Jaya, on Saturday (Dec 20).

Furthermore, Khairul said the competition showed that the platform serves as a preparatory ground for Sarawak riders to face other racing competitions.

He stressed that the competition has instilled various positive impacts, including increasing road safety awareness, particularly among youths and motorcyclists.

In addition, it helps curb illegal racing activities through participation in accredited championships via legitimate, safe and licensed channels, in line with established laws and regulations.

In Category B, involving motorcycles below 186 cc, was won by Ahmad Harith, with Wan Nadzmi in second place and Mohamad Khalid finishing third.

Category C (250 cc–500 cc motorcycles) saw Mohd Irfan as the winner, followed by Ze’ Haazwil in second place and Hasrul Rajona in third.

Meanwhile, Hadi Charlie won Category D (motorcycles above 601 cc), with Felix Anthony as runner-up and Ahmad Fuad securing third place.
