KUCHING: The spirit of Christmas has brought a festive buzz to Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal and Kuching International Airport, as travellers with luggage in tow make their way home to celebrate with loved ones.
For many, the holiday journey goes beyond mere travel. It is a cherished annual ritual – a chance for students, working adults, and families long separated to reunite and reconnect with traditions that bring comfort, joy, and a sense of belonging.
For those tied down by work commitments throughout the year, the holiday season offers a rare window to return home. Long journeys, often by road, become more than just transit – they become a bridge to family, rest, and renewal.
Sarawak Tribune spoke to several travellers eager to return to their hometowns, each sharing their reflections, preparations, and hopes for the festive season.

“Christmas is for Family” – Ina Janet, 30
Ina Janet is heading home to Miri by bus this year. “Today I’m travelling by bus because I don’t have a car, although sometimes I do travel by car,” she said.
Despite a slight rise in travel costs, Ina said the journey remained affordable. “For two people, I paid RM218,” she shared at Kuching Sentral. Though she acknowledged the rising cost of living and seasonal spending, her excitement was undimmed.
“Everything is more expensive, and Christmas spending adds up – but I’m just happy to be going home. Christmas is the time to be with family. I started preparing early since the holiday is just days away,” she added.

“The Bus is Always Worth It” – Avril Geogina, 19
For student Avril Geogina, the journey back to Sri Aman is a familiar one. Currently studying at Management and Science University (MSU) Kuching, she always opts for the bus due to its affordability.
“I always use the bus – tickets are just RM20, which is reasonable for me,” she said.
After living in Melaka for 12 years, Avril returned to Sarawak with her family following her father’s retirement. Now, she’s looking forward to the long break until the New Year.
“I haven’t been home since November. My family is waiting. For Christmas, we usually go to the longhouse and decorate together. I also bring a cake to share,” she smiled.

“After a Year Away, I’m Coming Home” – Beatrice Uton, 29
Beatrice Uton, who lives in Jalan Paip, Sri Aman, hasn’t seen her parents in nearly a year due to work responsibilities. Now, with two weeks’ leave, she’s eagerly making her way home.
“I’m very happy. It’s been so long since I’ve seen my parents,” she said.
Beatrice is looking forward to traditional Christmas activities including Ngajat dance performances and fishing. “I most look forward to my mum’s cooking – kasam babi, kacang ma, and ayam pansuh. I also brought a layer cake for the celebration,” she shared.
As the New Year approaches, she hopes for positive changes and a fresh start.

“Christmas Helps Me Recharge” – Amisha Rani Shipa, 25
Assistant engineer Amisha Rani Shipa is heading home to Sri Aman for a much-needed break.
“I haven’t been back for a few months because of work in Kuching. My job is demanding, so I really treasure this chance to go home,” she said.
For Amisha, Christmas is about slowing down and reconnecting. “It’s time with my parents and siblings, enjoying home-cooked food and joining in the celebrations. Going home for Christmas brings peace – it helps me recharge before going back to work,” she added.

“In the Village, Christmas Feels Different” – Darrien Agan Valentine, 22
Darrien Agan Valentine, a mobile equipment operator, is returning to Miri for five days of well-earned rest.
“I went home earlier this year, but Christmas is always more meaningful. My job is physically tiring, so I really value this time,” he said.
Darrien plans to use the holiday to relax, reconnect with family, and catch up with friends. “Christmas in the village feels special. It’s a time to slow down and focus on togetherness,” he said.
As the festive lights twinkle in towns and villages across Sarawak, these shared moments of return and reunion remind us what the season is truly about – home, family, and the joy of being together.
