MIRI: A fire that broke out at the Pasar Tamu Simpang Bekenu in the early hours of Monday was brought under control by members of the public.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 12.19 am reporting a blaze at the night market, located some 54 kilometres from Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station.
An alarm was raised immediately and a fire rescue tender with six personnel was dispatched at 12.20 am.
By the time the fire engine arrived at around 1 am, the fire had already been fully extinguished by members of the public using water sourced from nearby premises.
Initial assessment by the operation commander confirmed that the fire involved market goods, equipment and electrical wiring.
The blaze is estimated to have affected about 20 per cent of the area and no casualties were reported.
Firefighters then conducted thorough inspections and monitoring to ensure there were no remaining hotspots or risks of re-ignition.
The operation was declared under control at 1.02 am and concluded fully at 1.50 am, after which the team returned to the station.
