KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has launched the “Name Our Spaces” contest, inviting the public to play an active role in shaping the identity of a major upcoming landmark development in the city.
MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the initiative gives the community a unique opportunity to contribute ideas that will leave a lasting legacy.
“This contest allows the public to help name spaces that reflect Kuching’s culture, creativity, and shared aspirations,” he told a press conference here today (Dec 29).
“The contest forms part of MBKS’s broader commitment to participatory city-building as it transforms the existing swimming pool area into a new Gastronomy Centre and Water Fun Park complex.
“The development is designed as a vibrant public destination, bringing together leisure, food, business, and cultural elements in an integrated space for residents and visitors alike,” he said.
He said that members of the public are invited to submit name proposals for the overall development as well as specific components, including the Water Fun Park, dining areas, retail corridors, and exhibition hall.
“Additional spaces open for naming include a co-working space and a multipurpose hall, with selected names set to become part of the complex’s identity for years to come.
“The contest is open to all Sarawakians, with participation free of charge, and entries accepted in any language, highlighting Sarawak’s multicultural and multilingual society,”he said.
According to Wee, meaningful names should resonate with the community while celebrating local heritage, creativity, and a strong sense of belonging.
“Attractive prizes are offered to encourage participation, including RM3,000 for first prize, RM2,000 for second prize, RM1,000 for third prize, and five consolation prizes of RM500 each.
“Winning entries will be evaluated based on suitability, originality, and relevance to the character and intended function of each space.
“Submissions must be made using the official contest entry form, available via the MBKS website or at the MBKS lobby, and can be submitted by email or in person.
“The RM65 million project began construction in 2024 and has currently reached 60 per cent completion.
“The Gastronomy Centre and Water Fun Park complex is expected to be completed by mid-2026, adding a new landmark to Kuching’s urban landscape,”he said.
MBKS urged community groups, creative individuals, and families to take part, reaffirming its commitment to inclusive development and shared civic pride.
