SIMUNJAN: Priority is being given to the safety and welfare of flood victims with close on-ground coordination and sustained relief operations in the state.
On Saturday, Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki checked on Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) in Simunjan and Gedong.
He was there to assess conditions on the ground, review the management of the PPS, and engage directly with evacuees affected by continuous heavy rainfall in the Samarahan Division.
In Simunjan, Mohamad Abu Bakar visited the PPS at Dewan Mesra Simunjan, where he was briefed on the latest flood situation, the number of affected victims, and measures implemented by the Simunjan District Disaster Management Committee to ensure the safety, comfort and basic needs of evacuees throughout their stay.
He also took time to interact with flood victims and expressed appreciation to security agencies, rescue teams and frontline personnel involved in evacuation operations and PPS management.
He reiterated that the Sarawak government places the highest priority on public welfare during disaster situations, emphasising the provision of adequate basic necessities and continuous monitoring to enable swift responses to changing conditions.
He later conducted a site visit to the PPS at the Gedong Community Hall, accompanied by Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee.
The visit aimed to assess relief operations, review preparedness, and ensure effective coordination among agencies as flooding impacted surrounding areas.
As of 11am, a total of 21 flood victims from five households were sheltering at the Gedong PPS.
This included one family from Kampung Datuk Patinggi Muai, Gedong, and four families from Kampung Kanchong Baru (Sungai Girang), Gedong.
Of the total, three were adult men, six adult women, six boys and five girls, including one baby girl, who were relocated to the centre to ensure their safety and well-being.
During the visit, Mohamad Abu Bakar and Rodiyah conveyed their appreciation to all security agencies and rescue teams for their commitment and coordinated efforts in evacuation and relief operations.
Also present during both visits were Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Administration) Datu Felicia Tan Ya Hua, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women, Early Childhood and Community Well-being Development Sarawak Nur Alina Abdullah @ Colliner Gohe, Deputy Director of the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS) Abang Ahmad Abang Julai, Samarahan Division Resident and Chairman of the Samarahan Division Disaster Management Committee Mohamad Irwan Bahari Bujang, Simunjan District Officer and Chairman of the Simunjan District Disaster Management Committee Sanuyah Mohamad, Gedong District Officer and Chairman of the Gedong District Disaster Management Committee Tamida Da’adi, Simunjan District Police Chief DSP Rafhan Kepli, as well as representatives from relevant departments.
