KUCHING: The appointment of the next Sarawak premier ultimately rests with the people, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“The people must choose who they want to lead. Leadership should be based on merit and public confidence.

“It is up to the rakyat to see the potential of anyone holding this position,” he said during the townhall session in conjunction with the ninth anniversary of his administration at Hikmah Exchange on Tuesday (Jan 13).

He reflected on how he became premier following the passing of the late Tun Pehin Sri Adenan Satem

“When he passed away, our party components asked why not me to lead, and I accepted the responsibility,” he said.

The Premier emphasised that leadership carries heavy responsibilities and requires high integrity.

“Personality, trustworthiness, and sincerity in helping the rakyat are key. Leaders must act honestly and with dedication, because the responsibility is very heavy,” he said.

Abang Johari said that the role of a leader is more than holding office; it is about leaving a lasting positive impact.

“Helping the people sincerely leaves a mark beyond one’s lifetime. In Islam, the knowledge we leave behind is one of the deeds that continues after death.

“Initiatives like free education for our children are part of that legacy,” he said.

He also spoke about the importance of mentorship and experience in preparing leaders.

“I was trained by leaders before me, including the late Adenan Satem and Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud. Their guidance helped me understand how to manage responsibilities effectively,” he said.

Acknowledging his age of 75, the Premier stressed the need for proper succession planning.

“Sometimes young people are not ready to lead if they are not trained.

“Sarawak must nurture the next generation of leaders and consider diversity, including the representation of all races,” he said.

Abang Johari reminded that leadership requires a combination of capability and integrity.

“It is not just about age or seniority. The next premier must be someone who can handle responsibilities with honesty and dedication,” he said.

He also highlighted the need for continuity in governance.

“When the time comes for me to step down, Sarawak must continue to grow in a structured and sustainable manner under capable leaders,” he said.

The Premier urged the rakyat to focus on the qualities of potential leaders, not just their popularity.

“The people must look at the personality and the integrity of those they want to lead. Leadership is a trust, and it must be respected,” he said.
