KUCHING: The Mile 7 Covered Basketball Stadium in Kota Sentosa will undergo a Phase 2 upgrade under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2025, with an allocation of RM300,000, says Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.

Yap witnessed the handover of the Letter of Award to the appointed contractor, An-Nashr Resources, together with officers from the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), marking the start of works for the community sports facility.

The Phase 2 upgrade aims to improve user comfort, safety and traffic flow, with the scope of works including the construction of two new changing rooms complete with shower facilities, resurfacing works, new car parks, and a new entrance to ease congestion during peak usage.

“This is not merely an infrastructure upgrade; it is an investment in our youths, families and community well-being,” Yap said, adding that sports facilities play an important role in promoting healthy lifestyles and social cohesion.

He noted that the project was implemented in response to feedback from residents and regular users of the facility.

Meanwhile, Yap also conducted a final inspection of a completed RTP 2023 pedestrian walkway upgrading project at Kota Sentosa during a separate site visit on the same day.

The walkway project, costing RM39,000, has been fully completed and handed back for public use.

“The upgrade enhances safety, accessibility and walkability, particularly for senior citizens, schoolchildren and residents who rely on walking within the neighbourhood.

“Small-scale, people-centric projects like pedestrian upgrades often have the biggest daily impact on residents’ lives,” he said, stressing the importance of practical improvements at the grassroots level.

Yap emphasised that all RTP projects under his watch are identified based on grassroots feedback, on-the-ground assessments and close coordination with local authorities, ensuring public funds are translated into tangible benefits.

He added that he will continue to work closely with Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and other relevant agencies to ensure development in Kota Sentosa remains practical, inclusive and people-focused.
