KUCHING: Thorough preparation, editorial independence and strong professional judgment are critical for journalists tasked with covering international events and overseas official engagements.
The Foreign Coverage: Challenges, Strategies and Tips workshop, organised for a total of 32 journalists from Sarawak Tribune and Suara Sarawak, was held at the Theater Hotel here today.
Veteran journalist Datuk Dr Chamil Wariya said foreign assignments test a reporter’s discipline, adaptability and decision-making skills, particularly in unfamiliar environments with limited access to information.
“Journalists must be able to work independently, identify strong story angles and deliver accurate, balanced reports despite tight timelines and logistical constraints.”
According to him, overseas coverage presents unique challenges including time zone differences, cultural sensitivities and difficulties in verifying information, making prior preparation essential.
Participants were advised to conduct thorough background research before departure to better grasp geopolitical developments, policy implications and issues relevant to Sarawak audiences.
Chamil also stressed the importance of preparing focused interview questions to maximise brief interactions with foreign leaders and key stakeholders, while maintaining clarity and relevance in reporting.
Effective time management, he added, is equally crucial, especially when reporters are required to handle multiple assignments while navigating different countries and communication systems.
