KUCHING: A viral video showing torn fragments of the Quran strewn along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman has led to the arrest of a 57-year-old local man yesterday (Jan 26).
The incident occurred last Friday (Jan 23) and two videos related to the discovery were uploaded on Facebook by a netizen, which sparked public concern.
It was also confirmed through closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings in the vicinity.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the suspect was picked up at an eatery in Taman Green Hill area following investigations into the incident.
“Initial findings indicate that the suspect is believed to have mental health issues.
“The act was not committed with any intention to provoke or create tension involving race, religion or royalty,” he said.
Alexson said the case is being investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a holy book with intent to insult religion, an offence punishable with imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both.
Police are also probing the case under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both.
