MIRI: A small fire involving a food stall at My Mall in Lutong was brought under control this afternoon (Feb 5) following swift action by members of the public, preventing the incident from escalating into a larger blaze.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received an emergency call at 4.04 pm about a shopping complex fire, and a team from the Lutong station arrived within eight minutes.
By the time firefighters reached the location at 4.12 pm, the fire had already been extinguished by civilians using six dry powder fire extinguishers available at the premises.
Initial assessments found approximately 10 per cent of the stall had been affected.
Firefighters conducted thorough checks to eliminate hotspots, stabilising the situation by 4.15 pm and concluding operations at 4.40 pm, with no injuries reported.
The operations, led by Operations Commander, PBK I Iskandar Aus, and assisted by Senior Operations Commander, PBT II Henry Jugah, involved six personnel supported by a Fire Rescue Tender and a Triton vehicle.
Bomba noted that functional fire extinguishers and prompt public response helped limit damage, highlighting the importance of fire safety awareness and preparedness in public and commercial spaces.
Members of the public are reminded to familiarise themselves with fire safety equipment and emergency procedures, particularly in high-traffic areas such as shopping centres, to mitigate risks and support first responders during emergencies.
