KUCHING: Taman Sahabat was bathed in new light with the completion of major upgrades to one of the popular parks in the city.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the comprehensive rewiring and lighting improvements represent the final stage of Taman Sahabat’s transformation, delivering on the council’s commitment to enhance public spaces across the city.
“We have done all the rewiring and all the improvement on the lighting, so you can actually see that this (place) is much brighter.
“You can also see that they’ve increased the (number of) decorative lighting to make this place more vibrant,” Wee told reporters at the lighting ceremony officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Sim Kui Hian on Friday (Feb 6).
The mayor emphasised that the improvements are part of MBKS’ ongoing pledge to systematically upgrade all parks under its jurisdiction.
Coinciding with the lighting ceremony, MBKS launched a Chinese New Year bazaar at Taman Sahabat.
The bazaar is a significant expansion of the city council’s festive programming, growing from one traditional location to four sites this year.

Alongside the established bazaar at Kenyalang Park, the new Taman Sahabat location opened on Thursday (Feb 5), and the other two at Saradise and Padungan opened on Friday (Feb 6).
Taman Sahabat bazaar features between 36 and 40 stalls, with the mayor highlighting the creative food selections available to visitors.
Addressing potential concerns about crowds being dispersed across multiple venues, Wee expressed confidence that each location would attract its own distinct demographic.
“Every area has its own crowd; they actually attract different types of crowds to patronise the place,” he explained, noting that he had yet to visit the Padungan site to assess its specific offerings.

MBKS has extended a warm invitation to the community to visit the bazaars.
“Do come by, drop by after your exercise and all that, come and enjoy what we have created for this coming Chinese New Year,” he said.
The multi-location approach reflects MBKS’ strategy to activate diverse public spaces and provide accessible festive experiences throughout different areas of the city during the Chinese New Year period.
