KUCHING: A Media Appreciation Luncheon here today recognised the media’s longstanding role in connecting communities and shaping public understanding in Sarawak’s multicultural society.

It was hosted by the Federation of Chinese Associations, Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Division (FCAS).

Held ahead of the upcoming Year of the Horse celebrations, the gathering served not only as a gesture of appreciation but also as a platform for reflection, interaction and renewed partnership between community organisations and members of the media.

FCAS president Datuk Seri Richard Wee said the gathering was held to thank members of the media for their continued support and companionship throughout the years, noting that media practitioners have played an important role in ensuring the voices and activities of the Chinese community are heard and understood more widely.

“The luncheon is held to express our sincere appreciation to our friends in the media for your continued support and companionship throughout the years,” he said.

He said the federation carries the responsibility of uniting Chinese associations while serving as a bridge between the government and the community, adding that without accurate reporting and documentation by the media, many community efforts and perspectives would not reach the broader public.

Wee noted that while cooperation with Chinese-language media has long been established, support from media across different language backgrounds has further strengthened understanding among Sarawak’s diverse communities by allowing news from the Chinese community to reach wider audiences.

Reflecting on the past year, he said media practitioners had consistently reported on issues related to education, cultural activities, community developments and public affairs with professionalism and responsibility.

Looking ahead, Wee said the federation would continue working closely with member associations to advance cultural, educational and social welfare initiatives.

He added that strengthening engagement with other communities remains important in Sarawak’s multicultural setting, where interaction and mutual understanding are key to preserving harmony while embracing diversity.

At the same time, he reaffirmed the federation’s support for positive state policies and efforts related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), emphasising the importance of safeguarding Sarawak’s rights and maintaining its social harmony.

“We will continue to convey the views and aspirations of the Chinese community to the Sarawak government while also assisting in the implementation of policies, as good policies require participation from all sectors of society,” he said.

Organising chairman and federation vice president Chew Kien Liang described the event as a platform for appreciation and interaction, highlighting the media’s role as a vital bridge connecting information with the public.

“Media professionals have upheld the principles of professionalism, responsibility and truth, allowing many important stories and voices to be seen and heard,” he said, adding that the luncheon was intended as a small token of appreciation while providing an opportunity to strengthen relationships and foster better understanding among participants.
