KUCHING: Head coach Voon Yong Hui believes Sarawak water polo is “on the right track” for the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026.

His confidence follows the state’s Under-21 men striking gold at the 61st MILO-NSC-MAS Malaysia Age Group (MAG) Championship in Negeri Sembilan last weekend.

Competing at the Negeri Sembilan Aquatic Centre in Paroi from Feb 6 to 8, Sarawak enjoyed a fruitful outing, with the Under-21 men clinching gold while the Under-24 women secured bronze.

The Under-16 boys, meanwhile, gained valuable exposure against strong opposition from across the country.

Voon noted that the Under-21 men’s and women’s categories comprised players from their respective SUKMA squads, making the result a meaningful benchmark ahead of the Games.

“All participating teams in the U-21 category were SUKMA squads. Our U-21 players are also part of the SUKMA team, so this was a very good benchmark for us,” he told Sarawak Tribune.

The triumph, he added, reflects the steady progress of the team’s preparations and the effectiveness of their structured training programme.

“We are on the right track in preparing for the coming SUKMA. The players showed discipline, teamwork and composure throughout the tournament”, he said.

Looking ahead, Voon expressed confidence that Sarawak can mount a serious challenge at SUKMA.
