KUCHING: A 35-year-old man who vandalised the pillars of a surau with green paint in Kampung Sungai Bedil Besar last January was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here today (Feb 12).
Mohammad Hafifi pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by damaging property before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan.
The court ordered the sentence to run from the date of his arrest on Jan 8.

Meanwhile, facts of the case revealed that at about 9.30 am the same day, the complainant discovered two surau pillars had been defaced with green paint by a man known as “Pipi”.
A police report was subsequently lodged, leading to the arrest of Hafifi at a house within the village.
Investigations found that he had intentionally vandalised the surau pillars using green paint.
It was understood that he committed the act to draw the village headman’s attention to help resolve personal issues with his older brother, whom he claimed often mocked and laughed at him.
The prosecution was conducted by Prosecuting Officer Inspector, Nurshafiqa Nyaie Ilin, while the accused was unrepresented.
