KUCHING: Rural communities now have access to international-standard sporting facilities following the RM5-million upgrade of Song Open Stadium.
Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the extensive renovation includes a certified World Athletic running track, improved grandstands, and the resolution of other existing issues within the stadium, making it a modern facility suitable for both training and competition.
“This is part of our ongoing effort to develop sporting infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, so that young people can enjoy safe and comfortable facilities.
“With these upgraded facilities, schools in the area can train effectively for their sports days, and local youth can develop their athletic skills,” Abdul Karim said.
He added that the upgraded track meets international standards and carries the Athletic A Facility certification from World Athletics, putting it on par with tracks in some of the world’s most renowned stadiums.
“Our hope is that these facilities will help identify and nurture potential athletes who could go on to represent the district, state, and even the country in the future,” he said.
Present at the site was Lidam Assan, Katibas state assemblyman, who joined Abdul Karim in officiating the upgraded stadium.
Abdul Karim pointed out that such initiatives are crucial not just for developing athletes, but also for encouraging healthy lifestyles among young people and the broader community in both urban and rural areas.
