KUCHING: The federal government is drafting new legislation to address illegal online gambling amid growing concerns over its social impact, particularly on younger generations.

Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof, said the proposed law may be tabled in the upcoming Parliamentary sitting, either as a standalone Act or incorporated into existing cybercrime legislation.

“Online gambling is difficult to control under current laws. We close one outlet, another opens the next day,” he said, noting that enforcement authority rests with federal agencies rather than local councils.

He stressed that regardless of statistical comparisons, the issue must be treated seriously.

“Whether the numbers are high or low, it must be addressed. That is why we need stronger laws so the police have clear authority to act,” he said.

Fadillah also highlighted synthetic drug abuse as another pressing concern, describing it as challenging to curb and requiring closer cooperation between communities and the police.

Furthermore, he cautioned against the misuse of social media, warning that unverified or sensitive content could undermine interfaith and interracial harmony.

“Although Sarawak enjoys strong unity, we must remain vigilant. Social media can spread sensitive issues quickly if we are not careful,” he said.

He urged community leaders to remain proactive in safeguarding security and welfare at the grassroots level to ensure villages continue to thrive in a peaceful and harmonious environment.
