KUCHING: As Ramadan begins, a Samarahan family’s quiet resilience is shining through hardship, reflecting the true spirit of perseverance, gratitude and unwavering devotion to loved ones.
Jamaliah Putit, 40, lives in Kampung Meranek with her husband and two schooling children, managing daily life despite losing her left leg last year.
She underwent amputation due to uncontrolled diabetes and is also visually impaired, with her left eye completely blind, yet continues caring diligently for her household.
“Even with my misfortune, I am always grateful,” Jamaliah said, adding that she chooses to adapt and move forward despite adversity.
“Though I have only one leg and one eye now, I will keep pushing myself for my family.”
Despite her double disabilities, Jamaliah still performs household chores, standing on one leg in the kitchen while using crutches to prepare meals daily.
Her determination has inspired volunteers from Hope Place Kuching, who recently visited the family and learned about their struggles and perseverance.
Her husband, Kamarudin, 45, previously worked in a factory but now runs a small home-based business selling durian tree saplings.
He collects discarded durian seeds from rubbish bins, carefully cleans and plants them until they grow between two and four feet tall.
Kamarudin said he acquired his planting knowledge years ago after attending an agriculture course, which now helps him generate modest household income.
Besides farming, he is also skilled in carpentry and uses salvaged materials during his spare time to build furniture.
The family’s current home stands as proof of his craftsmanship, as it was built largely through his own hard work and determination.
Jamaliah receives RM300 monthly assistance from the Social Welfare Department, which helps cover basic necessities for their growing children.
Meanwhile, Hope Place continues supporting the family with essential food aid to ease their financial burden during these challenging times.
