KUCHING: The emphasis on the 3R concept at the Ramadan bazaar by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) is a wise initiative to encourage recycling practices among the community.
Tupong state assemblyman, Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, said the initiative should not only be applied within the industrial sector but also in the food and beverage industry.
“It is important to emphasise the practices of reuse, reduce and recycle in this industry, and DBKU has successfully introduced it.
“In fact, this step is also in line with the initiatives consistently highlighted by Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, which focus on sustainability,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after officiating at the opening ceremony of the Semarak Ramadan Bazaar in Gita today.
Meanwhile, Kuching North Mayor, Datuk Hilmy Othman, explained that the implementation of the 3R initiative had long been practised, but was introduced at the Ramadan bazaar as it was deemed suitable.
“We provide infrastructure for traders and visitors at this bazaar so that waste can be disposed off properly, and eventually become a habit in the future.
“We hope this effort will become a norm and train the public to maintain environmental cleanliness in their daily lives while, at the same time, safeguarding public health,” he said.
Further commenting, he said the collected waste would be channelled to a designated composting centre around Jalan Pending.
“The area is equipped with knowledge on composting methods. Therefore, the waste will be managed and processed into recyclable materials,” he added.
