MIRI: Miri police seized 14 motorcycles and issued 62 summonses during overnight operations targeting illegal street racing and antisocial riding, authorities said on Friday.
The district police chief, ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, said the operations, codenamed ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’, was carried out between 10 pm on February 20 and 3 am on February 21 in several hotspots, including Jalan Piasau, Jalan Tanjong Lobang and the Marina area.
A joint team from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters, assisted by officers from the Miri Central Police Station, inspected 35 motorcycles and screened 41 local individuals, comprising 38 men and three women.
“Action was taken against riders found flouting traffic laws and endangering public safety,” Farhan said in a statement.
The summonses were issued for a range of offences, including expired road tax, motorcycles without registration numbers, fancy number plates, riding without a valid licence, modified exhaust systems, and the absence of side mirrors.
Fourteen motorcycles were seized under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further investigation.
Police warned that street hooliganism, illegal vehicle modifications, and reckless riding would not be tolerated, as such behaviour posed a serious risk to both riders and other road users.
Motorists and motorcyclists were urged to ride responsibly, avoid gathering along roadsides, and refrain from activities that cause traffic congestion or excessive noise that could disturb public order.
Farhan also reminded parents and vehicle owners that allowing an unlicensed person to ride or drive could result in a fine of up to RM2,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both, if convicted under Section 39(5) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Police said similar operations would continue as part of ongoing efforts to curb dangerous riding and maintain safety on Miri’s roads.
