KUCHING: Ensuring sufficient and affordable food supply remains a top priority as the federal and Sarawak governments continue strengthening measures to stabilise prices and safeguard the people’s wellbeing.

Federal Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the first Sarawak Technical Working Group Meeting on Price Stabilisation 2026 which he chaired, reflects the ongoing commitment of both governments to maintain price stability and protect consumers in the state.

“The meeting focused clearly on one key matter – ensuring that Sarawak’s essential food supply remains sufficient, stable, and available at reasonable prices,” he said in a Facebook posting on Monday (Feb 23).

He stressed that the government’s approach goes beyond price control, as efforts are also directed at strengthening local production to make Sarawak more resilient and less dependent on external factors.

According to him, initiatives include boosting paddy production, developing the cattle and poultry industries, and empowering the fisheries sector, including its supply chains.

“These efforts aim to produce more consistent yields, reduce wastage, and increase domestic supply capacity. This means essential food items such as rice, meat, chicken, eggs, and fish will be more secure and stable in the long term.”

Nanta added that the initiatives would also bring wider economic benefits, including higher incomes for farmers, breeders, and fishermen, growth of local processing industries, and stronger rural economic activity.

At the same time, he said that price monitoring from farm level to retail would be enhanced to ensure greater transparency and fairness in the market.

He also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) for its proactive role in balancing the welfare of consumers and traders.

“Our priority is the people. I am confident the government, through KPDN, will continue to be firm in ensuring prices remain reasonable and not burdensome. Cost-of-living issues will continue to be addressed consistently, responsibly, and in line with the spirit of Malaysia Madani.”
