MIRI: Police have arrested two local men in connection with the theft of electrical cables along Jalan Tudan, here following intelligence-led operations by district investigators.
The arrests were made after Miri District Police received a report on the alleged theft. Acting on gathered intelligence, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department of Miri District headquarters, supported by personnel from Lutong Police Station and auxiliary police from Sarawak Energy Berhad, moved in to detain the suspects.
Police said the operation led to the seizure of several tools believed to have been used to cut cables, as well as a quantity of cables of various types suspected to belong to Sarawak Energy. Investigators believe the items were obtained through criminal activity linked to the theft.
The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Miri District Police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the police would take a firm stance against cable theft, describing it as a serious offence that disrupts essential services and endangers public safety.
“The police will not compromise with any party involved in stealing cables or damaging public property. Decisive legal action will be taken to safeguard the security and interests of the community,” he said.
Police also reminded the public that cable theft not only causes financial losses but can lead to power disruptions and safety risks, urging members of the community to report suspicious activities promptly.
