PUTRAJAYA: The Special Committee of Inquiry into the issue of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki’s share ownership is expected to submit its report to the Cabinet next week, said MADANI government spokesman, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, said the Cabinet today was told that the Special Committee of Inquiry, headed by Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, has almost completed its investigation into the matter.

“The Cabinet was told that the Special Committee of Inquiry, headed by Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, has almost completed its investigation and will submit the report next week,” he told a post-Cabinet Meeting press conference here today.

He said the Cabinet today discussed in detail issues regarding Azam’s alleged share ownership and alleged abuse of the MACC institution for corporate gain.

“Regarding the issue of the alleged abuse of the MACC institution for corporate gain, a police report has been lodged, and the Royal Malaysia Police are promptly investigating.

“This is to identify any party who has violated the law so that they can be brought to justice,” he said.

Fahmi said the Cabinet agreed that the issues regarding the MACC are extremely serious, and took note of calls for the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI).

“As such, the Cabinet will scrutinise the committee’s report and consider the follow-up actions, including the need for the establishment of RCI,” he said.

Bloomberg, in its earlier report, claimed that Azam held shares in a financial services company based on corporate filings.

However, at a recent press conference, Azam stressed that his shareholding, worth RM800,000 in a financial services company, was made transparently and according to procedures.

Pursuant to that, Democratic Action Party (DAP) Secretary-General, Anthony Loke Siew Fook, said he would propose at a Cabinet meeting that an RCI be established to investigate allegations linked to Azam. – BERNAMA
