KUCHING: The Asajaya Unity Cup will return this Aidilfitri, setting the stage for another festive football showdown as teams from across Samarahan and Kuching prepare to battle for honours at the Kampung Sambir football field.
Now entering its 58th edition, the popular grassroots tournament organised by Sambir Bistari Football Club (KBSB) is scheduled to kick off on the third day of Hari Raya, with the exact dates depending on when Aidilfitri falls this year.
A total of RM21,500 in prize money will be up for grabs, with the champions set to pocket RM7,000, while the runners-up will receive RM5,000, and the third-place finishers RM3,000.
Additional awards will also be presented for the top scorer and best player of the final, while teams that fall short of the semi-finals will receive RM500 consolation prizes.
KBSB patron, Datuk Abdullah Julaihi, said the annual tournament continues to serve as an important platform for discovering new football talents.
“I encourage teams to field their young players in this tournament so they can be spotted by bigger clubs in Kuching and have a chance to be integrated into their teams,” he said after officiating the launch of the 58th Asajaya Unity Cup football tournament at Sarawak Plaza today.
The event was also attended by Lea Holdings (M) Sdn Bhd’s Managing Director, Raymond Sim Hee Pang, and KBSB’s President, Jalek Jaafar.
More than 20 teams have registered so far, with organisers expecting participation to reach up to 50 teams in the main competition.
This year’s edition will also feature a veteran category for players aged 40 and above, with participation capped at 12 teams, adding another competitive element to the tournament.
Julaihi also expressed appreciation to Lea Sports Centre (LSC) for its continued support in sponsoring the tournament and contributing to the development of grassroots football in the region.
