KUCHING: Festive lighting and decorative installations will once again illuminate Kuching city centre as the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) steps up preparations to enliven the city for Ramadan and the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for the Regional Development Agency, DBKU and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, said the initiative is part of an annual effort to ensure areas under DBKU’s administration remain vibrant and welcoming, particularly during major festive seasons.
He said this year’s main focus will be the Kuching city centre, especially the Jalan Satok area.
“Every year we make efforts to enhance the vibrancy and festive atmosphere of the city, especially during festive seasons.
“In conjunction with the month of Ramadan and the upcoming Aidilfitri celebration, our main focus will be the Kuching city centre, particularly around Jalan Satok,” he told reporters after attending the Kuching Division Mushaf Wakaf Distribution Ceremony on Wednesday (March 4).
Dr Abdul Rahman added that DBKU is expected to launch the Aidilfitri Bazaar in the area within the next two days.
Preparations include the installation of large-scale decorative lights to further enhance the festive atmosphere.
Decorative lighting will also be installed at several key landmarks, including the Kuching Bridge.
Other locations that have been enhanced with lighting and beautification works include the Kuching Waterfront, Darul Hana Bridge, the surroundings of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Complex, as well as Pangkalan Sapi.
However, Dr Abdul Rahman raised concern over several recent vandalism incidents, including damage to an electrical supply station that powers decorative lights near the overpass at Taman Hussein in Petrajaya.
He called on the public to cooperate with the authorities in safeguarding public facilities and to refrain from acts of vandalism that could undermine efforts to beautify the city.
“We have taken many steps to beautify the city, but these efforts cannot be fully realised if such incidents continue to occur,” he said.
He also urged members of the public not to remain silent and to report any vandalism cases to local authorities or the police.
“It is a shared responsibility. If there are any incidents, even small ones, please report them so that vandalism can be curbed in our city,” he added.
