KAPIT: The RM23.5-million ferry project at Nanga Tulie, which had its groundbreaking ceremony on Friday (March 6), is set to improve daily river crossings for residents along Batang Rajang.
The state government’s initiative will see a ferry capable of carrying up to 24 vehicles at a time.
It is expected to benefit 33 longhouses between Nanga Tulie and Pekan Merit and provide easier access for students attending SK Nanga Encheremin and SK Ulu Pelagus.
“Living in Kapit, we know the river is more than a view – it is a lifeline. Many residents rely on crossings for work, school and transporting daily necessities.
“This project makes life safer, more organised, and efficient for our people,” said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi in a Facebook post on Friday.
The ferry service, which will charge only RM1 per trip, is designed to reduce the cost of daily travel while supporting local economic activities, from moving agricultural produce to facilitating access to services and employment.
The project is being implemented by Rambungan Maju Sdn Bhd under a design-and-build contract, with close collaboration between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development, Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak, and PWD Kapit as the executing agency.
Nanta also expressed gratitude for the state government’s support and urged smooth implementation to ensure residents can enjoy the benefits as soon as possible.
