KUCHING: The management of temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in Batu Kawa has been praised for ensuring flood victims receive sufficient aid and basic necessities during their displacement.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas expressed his satisfaction with the operations at two centres, namely Dewan R-Piang in Kampung Sinar Budi and Dewan Stapok. These centres currently house 90 families, totaling 340 victims from the same village.
“I am satisfied with the management of these sites today. I see that everything is organised smoothly and the required supplies are being provided adequately,” he was quoted as saying in an UKAS report after visiting the centres today (Mar 11).
Uggah, who is also the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman, said that both centres appeared well-managed, with all basic requirements for the victims fully met. He credited the close cooperation between rescue agencies and the local community for the seamless evacuation process.
According to Uggah, even with persons with disabilities (OKU) and senior citizens among the victims, the evacuation was not hindered as they gave their full cooperation to the authorities.
“This demonstrates the spirit of cooperation we encourage during disasters like floods. Victims cooperated well when instructed to evacuate,” he said.
He added that the evacuation operation, which began around 1:00 AM, was carried out in an orderly manner due to increasingly robust disaster management Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
The operation was mobilised at the Resident and District Officer levels, involving various agencies including the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), and other relevant bodies.
“All agencies stepped up to play their parts to ensure the victims’ safety. So far, we are grateful that no untoward incidents have occurred,” he said.
