HELLO dear readers,

Greetings from Beijing, China! It’s a joy to connect with you as we continue our month-long journey through the colours that colour our lives. This week let’s dive deep into the radiant essence of orange – a hue that beautifully symbolises warmth, creativity, and community. As we explore the significance of orange, both personally and culturally, let us allow it to inspire us to reflect on our own lives, especially in the light of our shared human experiences.

Before we begin, I encourage you to ponder these reflective questions:

How does your environment influence your emotions?

In what ways can you use colour to enhance your creative journey?

What stories of connection have you experienced that were sparked by a simple moment of warmth?

Dear readers, Orange is more than a color; it embodies a spectrum of emotions, connections, and experiences. Positioned between the intensity of red and the cheerfulness of yellow on the color wheel, orange is a fusion of enthusiasm and warmth.

This vibrant hue not only stimulates the senses but also symbolises friendship, family bonds, and sociability across various cultures. Just like the vivid orange hues of Beijing sunsets, it beckons us to embrace the communal glow of creativity and togetherness.

In Beijing, a city steeped in history and culture, the significance of orange shines through its ancient hutongs—narrow alleys lined with traditional courtyard homes exuding a cozy warmth akin to flickering hearth flames. Historically, the hearth symbolizes the heart of a home, a gathering place for families to share stories and strengthen bonds. In modern Beijing, orange decorates local establishments, fostering a lively atmosphere reminiscent of a candlelit room radiating warmth.

Sitting in a charming café in Beijing on a Sunday afternoon in March 2026, bathed in the soft amber glow of orange lighting alongside my daughter, I marveled at how this color fosters genuine conversations and connections. Laughter filled the air as people shared tales over cups of tea, underscoring the power of orange to nurture camaraderie and facilitate moments of healing and unity on life’s journey.

Around the world, orange holds diverse cultural meanings. In Africa, it symbolises harvest and community ties, while in South America, it enlivens festivals celebrating heritage and unity. In North America, it mirrors the autumnal warmth of Thanksgiving gatherings. Across Europe, orange signifies creativity, seen in art and culinary delights. In Asia, it embodies good fortune, warmth, and hospitality ingrained in local traditions and customs.

In Europe, orange plays a role in art, representing creativity and the spice of life, from the vibrant works of Vincent van Gogh to the delightful orange peels that adorn holiday confections. Finally, in Asia, not only is orange revered as a symbol of good fortune, but it also connotes warmth and hospitality, reflected in the traditions and cultures of the people.

Through these cultural lenses, we can appreciate how orange resonates with our five senses. The fresh scent of an orange being peeled touches our sense of smell, while the taste of sweet oranges tantalises our palate. The warmth of the sunset – amber and fiery orange – touches our sight, while the laughter shared around firelight fills our hearts with joy. The sound of joy-filled voices celebrating life around a welcoming hearth reflects the essence of community.

Orange tantalises not only our emotions but our five senses as well. Visually, it captivates us with its bright, cheerful presence. Tactilely, think of the warmth of a knitted orange scarf against your skin. The scent of orange blossoms can transport you to a sun-soaked garden, enveloping you in sweet nostalgia. The taste of ripe oranges, bursting with juice, is an experience of pure delight – refreshing and invigorating. Finally, the sounds of laughter and conversation that thrive in orange-lit spaces remind us that warmth invites open hearts.

Consider how the atmosphere shifts when you immerse yourself in the soft, inviting glow of orange light. Whether in a tea house surrounded by friends or curled up on the sofa at home, orange light fosters a sense of safety and openness. It encourages us to share our dreams, our fears, and our stories.

In essence, orange light doesn’t merely illuminate – it cultivates a space for healing and connection. It prompts us to recognise the divine spark within ourselves and each other. As we gather, our stories intertwine, reflecting the tapestry of God’s creation around us.

As the Bible beautifully puts it in Proverbs 17:17: “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” Through the warmth of orange, we find friends, family, and even strangers who stand beside us in times of joy and in moments of struggle.

As we embrace the warmth of orange – this beautiful reminder of connection and creativity – I invite you to join me in a hopeful prayer. May we nurture our connections with open hearts, celebrating the stories that bind us. May the warmth of orange inspire us to reach out to one another, to offer compassion, and to build a community where every voice is heard.

Dear Lord, thank You for the gift of colour in our lives, and for the friendships that light our paths. As we journey through this month of orange, help us to embrace the warmth of connection and creativity. May we remember that in the tapestry of life, we are woven together, and none of us are alone. Amen.

Dear readers and friends, during my healing journey, beginning on 26 February, I have personally felt this warmth in abundance. Each day, I take comfort in the nurturing light of orange, both within me and in my surroundings. These past weeks have presented their challenges. Yet, with every sunrise colouring the sky with hope, I am reminded that I am not alone. I keep trusting and entrusting my path into the Lord’s hands, believing wholeheartedly that all things work together for good (Romans 8:28).

As we finish this week’s exploration, I encourage you to sit with these reflective questions:

What moments of warmth have sparked new connections in your life?

How can you bring more warmth into your daily surroundings?

In what ways can you use the elements of colour – like orange – to enhance your creativity and foster communal journeys?

As we continue to navigate through life, let the warmth of orange remind you that each small action can lead to profound connections. Embrace the colours around you, and may your journey be filled with warmth, creativity, and love.

I encourage each of you to invite the warmth of orange into your life this March. Let it inspire you to connect, create, and celebrate the journey we share as travellers of this beautiful world. Together, we can savour the sweetness of life’s colours in full spectrum.

With love from Beijing, until next week, let’s keep the fires of connection burning bright!
