KUALA LUMPUR: The media can play an important role in strengthening the spirit of nationalism among Malaysians, which serves as a foundation for nation-building, said Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
He said the role is crucial in ensuring that society continues to appreciate the value of patriotism and understands the shared responsibility of safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.
“The media can help nurture the spirit of nationalism, which is important as a foundation for national defence,” he said at the Defence Minister’s iftar with media practitioners here on Wednesday.
Also present were Deputy Defence Minister, Adly Zahari; Chief of Defence Force, General Datuk Malek Razak Sulaiman; Army Chief, General Datuk Azhan Md Othman; Navy Chief, Admiral Tan Sri Dr Zulhelmy Ithnain; and Air Force Chief, General Datuk Seri Muhamad Norazlan Aris.
BERNAMA’s Editor-in-Chief, Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, and BERNAMA News Service’s Executive Editor, Mohd Haikal Mohd Isa, were also present.
Khaled also commended media practitioners for their continued cooperation in covering defence and national security matters.
He said amid the current geopolitical situation, particularly the ongoing conflict in West Asia, every country must remain vigilant and continue strengthening its security capabilities.
“Security and defence are not solely the responsibility of the armed forces but require the involvement and contribution of all Malaysians,” he said. – BERNAMA
