KUCHING: The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Society of SJK Chung Hua No 5 visited Hun Nam S’ng Tang Old Folks Home on Friday (March 13) to promote compassion and respect for elders.

The visit was led by the school’s headmistress, Tay Kok Ing, and involved schoolteachers, teacher trainees as well as members of the Red Crescent unit.

In her speech, Tay emphasised the importance of practising core values such as filial piety, respect for elders and community service, which are deeply rooted in Chinese cultural traditions.

She said activities like the visit help nurture virtues such as gratitude, compassion and social responsibility among students, while encouraging them to care for the elderly and contribute positively to society.

In MRC statement issued today (March 14), Tay also expressed her appreciation to teachers, parents and students for their support and commitment in making the programme a success.

She added that such initiatives play an important role in fostering societal harmony while helping students develop empathy, character and a strong sense of community spirit.

The event also included activities like giving angpows, singing performances, team competitions, and refreshments, which were enjoyed by the elderly participants.
