MIRI: Close cooperation between schools and parents remains essential in shaping students’ academic performance and character development, said Sarawak’s Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) at Sekolah Kebangsaan St Joseph Miri on Saturday (Mar 14), Lee said the success of a school should not rest solely on the shoulders of teachers, but must also involve the active participation of parents.
He said the PTA plays a critical role as a partner to the school, helping to strengthen programmes that benefit students.
“A school’s progress depends on the collective commitment of teachers, parents and the wider community,” he told parents and teachers attending the gathering.
Lee said sustained collaboration between families and schools could help create a supportive learning environment that encourages students to develop both academically and personally.
He added that such cooperation was important in nurturing well-rounded students with balanced physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual growth.
The minister, who is also the state assemblyman for Senadin, urged parents to continue supporting school activities and programmes, either through moral encouragement or financial contributions within their means.
He noted that parent-teacher associations could also help schools raise funds to enable students to take part in competitions and events beyond the school level.
“These include academic contests, sports tournaments and other co-curricular activities that help build confidence and leadership among students,” he said.
At the event, Lee announced a grant of RM10,000 to support activities organised jointly by the school and its PTA over the coming year.
He said such support was intended to strengthen school programmes and enhance opportunities for students to participate in educational and extracurricular initiatives.
The annual meeting brought together parents, teachers and school administrators to review the association’s activities and discuss plans for the year ahead.
