MUKAH: The 1.44-kilometre Batang Igan Bridge is now open, replacing the ferry service across the river and becoming the ninth completed bridge in Sarawak.
According to Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD) Facebook post today, the bridge was officiated during its pre-opening ceremony by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also the Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD).
“The construction of the Batang Igan Bridge is part of the Sarawak Coastal Road Development Package D5, implemented by the Sarawak PWD as the executing agency under the MIPD.
“Measuring 1,439.40 metres in length, the bridge was constructed in accordance with JKR R5 standards as a two-lane structure, using the Prestressed Post-Tensioned T-Beam and Balanced Cantilever system.

“The project also includes the construction of two-lane approach roads on both sides, along with upgrades to sections of the existing roadway to R5 standards to improve road safety and enhance user comfort,” it said.
With the completion of the Batang Igan Bridge, it becomes the ninth bridge completed in Sarawak following the Marudi, Muara Lassa, Tun Taib Mahmud (Jepak), Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang Tuanku Haji Othman (Batang Rajang), Batang Saribas, Datuk Amar Juma’ani (Bintangor), Sebauh, and Lingga bridges.
For the record, the pre-opening ceremony marks another milestone in the Sarawak government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the state’s infrastructure network through the Sarawak Coastal Road project, delivering tangible benefits to the people.
